Best Laser Engraver for Wood: 5 Diode Picks From 2.5W to 20W
Five diode laser engravers for wood signs, coasters and plywood cut-outs, compared by laser power, bed size, air assist and the cut ratings each listing gives.
Wood is the most forgiving material for a laser, and the reason most people buy one. A blue diode laser engraves almost any wood, and with enough power it cuts plywood for signs, ornaments and boxes. This guide is for hobbyists and sellers working mainly in wood, and compares five diode machines from a 2.5W desk engraver to a 20W with an 825 mm bed.

How we scored them
Each machine is scored out of 100 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. None of the five wood listings states a warranty term, so every pick scores zero there.
| Product | HQ Score | Perf. | Build | Value | Safety | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Longer Ray5 20W Ext | 59 | 26 | 16 | 15 | 2 | 0 |
| ACMER S2 12W | 59 | 22 | 14 | 16 | 7 | 0 |

What the wood listings leave out
None of the five machines here states a warranty term, and only two name more than one safety feature. One states a laser class that does not fit its power. Cut ratings are given three different ways: one pass, multiple passes, or not at all. Compare them carefully, and read our beginner guide if a stated warranty matters to you; several machines there have one.
| Machine type | Engrave | Cut |
|---|---|---|
| Diode | Yes | Limited |
| CO2 | Yes | Yes |
| Fiber | Limited | No |
| CNC router | Yes | Yes |
The most forgiving laser material. Diode lasers cut thin stock in one or more passes; CO2 lasers cut thicker boards faster. Resinous woods like pine engrave unevenly because of the grain.
Safety: Wood smoke and sparks can ignite. Use air assist, never leave the job running unattended, and do not laser pressure-treated or painted wood, which can release toxic compounds.
Buying guide: lasers for wood
Power for engraving vs cutting
Engraving wood takes little power: 2.5W to 5W gives clean, dark marks. Cutting takes much more. As a rough guide from these listings, 5.5W is rated for 5 mm plywood and 12W for thicker paulownia in several passes. If you plan to cut often, buy for cutting.
Air assist
Air assist blows a jet of air at the cut. It clears smoke, reduces charring on the edges, keeps the lens clean and lowers the chance of flare-ups. Only one pick here includes a full kit; the Twotrees has a nozzle ready for a pump.
Bed size and sign work
A 300 x 300 mm bed handles coasters, ornaments and small signs. Long signs need a bigger bed or an extension like the Longer kit’s 375 x 825 mm.
Choosing the wood
Basswood, birch plywood, maple and cherry engrave evenly. Pine engraves unevenly because of resin and grain. Laser-grade plywood cuts more cleanly than hardware-store plywood, which can hide glue voids. See our plywood notes.
Wood burns. Use air assist, stay with the machine for the whole job, keep a fire extinguisher at hand and clear debris from under the bed. Vent smoke outdoors or through a fume extractor, especially with plywood and MDF glues. Never laser pressure-treated or painted wood, and wear glasses rated for about 450 nm with any open frame. See the FDA guidance on laser products.
Frequently Asked Questions
What power laser do I need to engrave wood?
Engraving needs only 2.5W to 5W. Cutting plywood needs more: listings here rate 5.5W for 5 mm plywood, with thicker cuts needing 10W or more and several passes.
Can a diode laser cut wood?
Yes, within its power. Thin plywood and basswood cut well on diodes with air assist. Thick hardwood is slow, and a CO2 laser cuts faster; see our CO2 guide.
What wood is best for laser engraving?
Basswood, birch plywood, maple, cherry and walnut give even results. Avoid pressure-treated, painted or varnished wood, which can release harmful fumes.
Why does my laser burn the edges of wood?
Heat and smoke build up at the cut. Air assist, more passes at higher speed, and masking tape on the surface reduce scorching.
Is CO2 or diode better for wood?
Diodes engrave wood very well and cost less. CO2 cuts thicker wood faster. For mostly engraving with some thin cutting, a diode is enough.
