Best Laser Engraver for Small Business: 6 Picks for Etsy Sellers and Shops

Six production-grade machines for sellers and small shops, from a 20W print-and-cut enclosure to a 100W CO2 with a 20 x 28 in bed, compared by throughput.

Four laser engravers for small business production shown as product cards with their HQ Scores: xTool S1 40W 72, xTool M2 20W Color 71, OMTech 100W 67, xTool F2 Ultra 62

A laser for a business is judged differently from a hobby machine. What matters is how many pieces it finishes in an hour, how big a batch fits on the bed, whether it cuts the materials your best sellers are made from, and what happens when it breaks. This guide is for Etsy sellers, market vendors and small shops, and it compares six production-grade machines: enclosed diode, CO2 and fiber.

Most “business” laser listings are hobby machines

A search for laser engravers for business turns up mostly small hobby machines. Of the 13 listings with a price in our sample, 11 cost under $400 when we collected them, with 5W to 20W diodes and beds of 130 x 130 mm to about 400 x 400 mm. Those are good starter machines, but not production tools, so we drew the picks above from our CO2, enclosed and fiber research instead.

Buying guide: lasers for a small business

Match the laser to your best sellers

Wood signs, leather patches and cutting boards: a high-power diode or CO2. Clear acrylic signs and cake toppers: CO2 only. Color-marked metal, jewelry and stainless tumblers: fiber, ideally MOPA. Printed stickers and cards: a print-and-cut machine like the xTool M2 Color Craft. Our Machine Finder sorts this in five questions.

Throughput is bed size times speed

A bigger bed means more pieces per run, and fewer reloads. Compare beds before rated speed: the xTool S1’s 23.93 x 15.16 in bed takes 119 dog tags in one batch according to xTool, while a 150 x 150 mm field takes a handful. Pass-through doors and conveyors help with long or repeated pieces.

Downtime and support

When a machine is your income, the warranty matters. Only two of our six picks state a warranty term, both 1 year, and OMTech offers 2 years of support without a written warranty term. Ask about spare parts, tube and module replacement, and turnaround before you buy.

Running costs

Budget for exhaust or fume extraction, replacement CO2 tubes, inkjet cartridges on print-and-cut machines, and materials. The listings here do not price these, so get quotes before you set product prices.

Where you will run it

Enclosed Class 1 machines suit a home office or retail counter. Large CO2 cabinets need a garage or workshop, an outdoor vent and a nearby circuit. Fiber markers with open galvo heads need a shielded area and 1064 nm glasses.

Safety

Production means long run times, which raises fire risk. Never leave a running laser unattended, keep an extinguisher at the machine, vent smoke outdoors, and wear glasses rated for your laser’s wavelength on any machine without a working enclosure. Never laser PVC or vinyl. If you employ staff, OSHA guidance applies; see OSHA laser hazards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What laser should I buy to start an Etsy business?

Start from your product. For wood and leather, an enclosed 20W to 40W diode such as the xTool S1 covers most of it. For acrylic you need CO2, and for bare metal you need fiber.

Is CO2 or diode better for a small business?

CO2 cuts clear acrylic and thicker material faster. High-power diodes are smaller, cheaper and easier to run indoors, and handle wood, leather and coated tumblers well.

How big a bed do I need for production?

As big as your largest product times the number you want per run. Many sellers find a 12 x 8 in bed limiting; the beds here run from 7.9 x 7.9 in for fiber marking to 20 x 28 in for CO2.

Do I need a fume extractor?

You need either an exhaust vented outdoors or a fume extractor. For a retail counter or shared building, an extractor is usually the practical choice.

Which of these machines have a written warranty?

The xTool M2 20W Color Craft and the Monport 60W Fiber each state 1 year. OMTech offers 2 years of support. The others state no warranty term.
