End mills and router bits look alike on the bench, but the listings draw a clear line: end mills cut metal, router bits cut wood. This end mill vs router bit comparison puts two of each side by side, using what each listing states about material, shank, flutes and profiles, and opens with a verdict on who should pick which side.

Verdict: pick an end mill when the work is metal. The end mill listings here are rated for alloy and hardened steels to HRC45, stainless and cast iron. Pick a router bit when the work is wood. The router bit listings here cover MDF, hardwood, softwood, plywood and particle board, and one of them explicitly forbids ferrous metal. Choose by the material, not the machine.

End mill vs router bit: what the listings show

The material split is the whole story. The carbide 5-pack lists carbon steels, alloy steels, pre-hardened steels to HRC45, hardened steels and cast iron. The HHIP lists steel, stainless steel and harder materials. The KOWOOD lists wood, MDF, particle board, plywood and compact panel, and warns against cutting ferrous metal such as steel and iron. The MNA lists MDF, hardwood, softwood and particle board. No listing crosses the line: the end mills never claim wood, the router bits never claim metal.

Shanks and fit

Three of the four ride on 1/4 inch shanks: the carbide 5-pack, the KOWOOD set and the MNA set. The KOWOOD listing says its 1/4 inch shank gives greater stability and less vibration, and it includes a 1/4 inch collet. The HHIP is the outlier with a 1/2 inch Weldon shank and a flat surface that the listing says ensures a firm fit in tool holders. Match the shank to the holder or collet you own; a 1/2 inch Weldon shank does not fit a 1/4 inch collet.

Flutes and profiles

Both end mills are 4-flute: the carbide 5-pack for rigidity in shallow slots, profiles and finish work, the HHIP for cutting-edge engagement and smoother finishes in steel. The KOWOOD router bits are 2-flute, the woodworking standard here. Profiles split by purpose: square end on the carbide set, center-cutting on the HHIP for plunging, and 90-degree V-groove plus round nose on the MNA for lettering and relief. The MNA states no flute count, so that cell stays honest.

Choose an end mill if

  • You cut steel, stainless, alloy or cast iron; the listings here rate end mills to HRC45.
  • You need to plunge straight down; the HHIP is center-cutting for plunging, slotting and pocketing.
  • You have a mill or a rigid CNC with proper tool holders, including a 1/2 inch Weldon holder.

Choose a router bit if

  • You cut wood, MDF, plywood or particle board; the listings here forbid ferrous metal on the KOWOOD.
  • You make signs; the MNA set is built for V-groove lettering and relief routing.
  • You want a beginner-friendly set; the KOWOOD ships 15 pieces in a wooden case.

FAQ: lasers and CNC

Can I use a router bit to cut metal?

Not these. The KOWOOD listing explicitly says do not cut ferrous metal such as steel and iron, and the MNA lists only wood materials. Metal belongs to the end mill side, which is rated for steels to HRC45.

What is the difference between 2-flute and 4-flute bits?

Flute count trades chip clearance against finish. The 4-flute end mills here are stated for rigidity and smoother finishes in steel. The 2-flute KOWOOD is the woodworking setup here, where fewer flutes clear chips faster. Match the flute count to the material, as the listings do.

What does center-cutting mean on an end mill?

The HHIP’s center-cutting end lets it plunge straight down into the work, which the listing says suits plunge cutting, slotting, ramping and pocketing. A non-center-cutting end mill cannot start a cut in the middle of a surface.

What is AlTiN coating?

On the carbide 5-pack, AlTiN is an aluminum-rich coating that the listing says gives excellent hot hardness and oxidation resistance, backing the HRC45 rating. It is a performance coating for metal cutting, not a safety feature.

Will these bits fit my 1/4 inch collet?

Three of them: the carbide 5-pack, the KOWOOD set and the MNA set are all 1/4 inch shank, and the KOWOOD includes a 1/4 inch collet. The HHIP needs a 1/2 inch holder for its Weldon shank, not a 1/4 inch collet.
