If you make wooden signs, plaques and cut parts for sale, the machine you want pairs a CNC frame with a laser head, so the same setup engraves a design and cuts the shape. This guide compares machines for the best cnc laser for wood engraving, from a compact app-controlled model to a stronger workshop machine with air assist, and it names what each listing actually states about power, work area, safety and warranty.

Specifications are manufacturer rated, as published on each listing and collected 1 November 2026. Work area is the engraving area each listing states.

What the listings tell you, and what they leave out

Five listings were compared for this guide. Four state a warranty term, all stating 1 year. Three state safety features, and two state no safety features at all. Two state air assist, and four state a work area. Two state a roller attachment as an option, and none includes one in the box as standard.

Two listings disagree with themselves on power. The Creality listing states both 72000mW and 10W, and the Carverall JL9 listing names 20000mW in its title, 22W in its size field, and 20.2-20.6W in its bullets. This guide scores the Creality as a 10W machine and the JL9 as a 20W machine, following the model names, and it flags both disagreements in the reviews.

Buying guide: choosing the best cnc laser for wood engraving

Power and cutting depth

Power decides how thick a board a machine cuts in a single pass, and the listings state it in watts. The JL9 states 20W with 15 mm plywood and 18-20 mm pine in a single pass. The Longer RAY5 states 10W with 20 mm wood and 30 mm acrylic. The K15 Pro states 7W with plywood and 3 mm acrylic. Treat a watt figure as optical output only where the listing says so, and never convert an input figure into an output figure.

Work area

Work area decides the largest piece a machine engraves without moving it. The Longer machines state 400 x 400 mm, the JL9 states 300 x 300 mm, and the K15 Pro states 200 x 300 mm. The Creality listing states no work area, so this guide leaves it as Not stated rather than guessing from the machine dimensions. If your work is mostly wood burning cnc laser projects on boards, check the area against the largest board you plan to engrave.

Air assist and focus

Air assist blows air at the cut point, and the Creality and JL9 listings state it, while the other listings state no air assist. The JL9 adds a focus pin with 3, 5 and 7 mm presets for thick cutting, thin cutting and fine engraving, and heightening columns as standard for taller items. Focus and air change edge quality on wood.

Software and control

The K15 Pro and JL9 work with CutLabX, LightBurn and LaserGRBL, and both offer app control. The RAY5 offers Wi-Fi, USB cable, APP and TF card transfer with offline operation and a 3.5-inch touchscreen. The Creality works offline with one-button preview, start, pause and stop, and imports files through a TF card. The title-only Longer machine names offline use and a 3.5-inch touchscreen, and nothing else about control.

What a CNC laser will not do

Bare metal marking needs a stated route: the JL9 offers a 1064 nm IR module for bare metal marking as an upgrade, and the K15 Pro offers an infrared module for metal engraving as an add-on. Metal, glass, coated metal and wood are the materials these listings state for their fitted sources. Never engrave PVC, vinyl, polycarbonate or ABS on any machine here. Eyewear counts as protection only with a stated OD and matching wavelength range.

Safety

Diode lasers emit a bright beam that can injure eyes and ignite cut material. Use only eyewear rated with an optical density (OD) for the machine’s wavelength, shield the beam path, never leave a job running unattended, and vent fumes from coatings. Never engrave PVC, vinyl, polycarbonate or ABS.

Project Match

  • Large wooden signs: Longer RAY5 10W, with a 400 x 400 mm work area and 20 mm wood cutting stated.
  • Plaques and coasters: Carverall JL9 20W, with a 300 x 300 mm work area and a built-in air pump stated.
  • Gifts and small-batch branding: Carverall K15 Pro, with a 200 x 300 mm work area and Wi-Fi app control stated.
  • Leather and paper work: Creality Falcon Pro, with leather and paper stated; work area Not stated.
  • Title-only backup: Longer Ray5 10W, 400 x 400 mm area named in the title.

How the scores add up

Each machine is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty. A spec the listing does not publish scores nothing.

Product HQ Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5
Carverall JL9 20W 9.7 32 21 21 8 3
Creality Falcon Pro 9.6 29 20 20 7 3
Carverall K15 Pro 9.5 27 20 20 5 3
Longer RAY5 10W 9.5 30 21 21 0 3

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

FAQ: lasers and CNC

Can a CNC laser cut wood in a single pass?

It depends on power and thickness as each listing states them. The JL9 states 15 mm plywood and 18-20 mm pine in a single pass, and the Longer RAY5 states 20 mm wood.

What work area suits wooden signs?

Match the area to the largest sign you plan to make. The Longer machines state 400 x 400 mm, the JL9 states 300 x 300 mm, and the K15 Pro states 200 x 300 mm. The Creality listing states no work area.

Is air assist needed for wood engraving?

Air assist is stated on the Creality and the JL9, and it blows air at the cut point for cleaner edges. The other listings state no air assist. If edge char matters for your signs, prefer a pick with air assist stated, and compare its power and work area on the same basis.

Are the safety glasses in the box enough protection?

Only where the listing states an OD and a wavelength range that matches the machine. The K15 Pro and JL9 listings include safety glasses or goggles without stating an OD or wavelength rating for them, so this guide does not count those glasses as rated protection. The K15 Pro and JL9 do state a laser safety class, which describes the machine as sold, not the glasses.

Can a CNC laser engrave metal and glass?

As these listings state them, yes for coated metal, stainless steel and glass in the JL9 case, and for metal and glass on the Creality. The K15 Pro states coated metal and ceramic. For bare metal marking, the JL9 offers a 1064 nm IR module and the K15 Pro offers an infrared module, both as add-ons.
