Deep slots, thick templates and full-depth dados all ask the same question of a router bit: how far down can it reach? Signs, mortises, template-cut furniture parts and thick stock joinery all benefit from a bit with real length. This is the best extra long router bit under 50 roundup, five bits the listings keep under the price line, from a 3 in flute straight bit to a compact 3-flute detail end mill. We compare cutting length, cut type, carbide and warranty from each listing, and we mark what it does not state.

What the router bit listings tell you

We read five router bit listings for this guide. One contradicts itself: the Accusize spec table says 117 mm overall and a 1-1/2 in flute while the title and bullets say 4.7 in overall and a 3 in flute; we trust the title and bullets. None of the five states a warranty term, and only the Freud names a safety feature.

Buying guide: best extra long router bit under 50

What counts as extra long

Cutting length, not overall length, decides how deep the bit can work. Here the Accusize lists a 3 in flute, the Freud and Yonico 2-1/2 in of cut, the HQMaster a 2 in cutting length and the YOKISHUN 1-1/4 in. Overall lengths run from 2-1/2 in to 4.7 in, so read the cutting length line, not the overall line. Our extra long router bit guide covers the full-size class.

Straight, spiral or flush trim

Straight bits (Freud, Accusize) cut grooves, dados and mortises. Spiral bits (HQMaster downcut, YOKISHUN up-cut) shear the material; downcut leaves a clean top edge on slots and dados, while up-cut clears chips and suits engraving detail. The Yonico is a flush-trim pattern bit for template work, a single job it does well; see our pattern router bit under $30 picks for more of that family.

Shank size and collets

Three bits here use a 1/2 in shank (Freud, Accusize, Yonico) and two use a 1/4 in shank (HQMaster, YOKISHUN). Match the shank to your collet before you buy: a 1/2 in shank will not fit a 1/4 in collet, and adapters are not something we recommend for long bits.

Carbide, coatings and balance

The Freud lists TiCo hi-density carbide ground with titanium, the Accusize tungsten carbide tips and the Yonico C3 micro-grain carbide with induction brazing; the HQMaster and YOKISHUN are solid carbide with a nano blue coating the listings say helps edge retention. The Freud adds computer balancing for vibration-free operation over 22,000 RPM, the only stated balance figure here.

Router bit safety

Wear eye and hearing protection, run dust collection, and clamp the workpiece down. Take deep cuts in several passes rather than one full-depth pass, and keep hands clear of the cutter. Per OSHA, stay current on tool safety guidance for your workspace.

Project Match

  • Deep grooves and dados in thick stock. The Accusize lists a 3 in flute for side cutting in hardwoods, plywood and MDF, the biggest reach here.
  • Template-trimmed furniture parts. The Yonico is a flush-trim pattern bit with a 2.5 in cut for templates and patterns on table-mount and handheld routers.
  • Clean-top slots and mortises. The HQMaster downcut spiral lists grooves, slots, plunge mortises and dados with a clean top edge.
  • Detail CNC work and engraving. The YOKISHUN 1/8 in 3-flute up-cut lists engraving and detail work on plywood, oak, MDF and hardwoods.
  • General CNC and router long cuts. The Freud lists CNC, hand-held and table-mounted use in solid wood, plywood and composites, with anti-kickback.

How the scores add up

Each bit is scored on performance (cutting length, cut type and geometry), build (carbide, brazing, balance), value, safety and warranty, with the weights published in How We Pick. For router bits, safety points come from named features such as anti-kickback design; only one listing names one. A factor the listing does not state scores zero.

Product HQ Score Perf. /35 Build /25 Value /25 Safety /10 Warranty /5
Freud 12-130 9.6 30 21 20 4 0
Accusize 0021-0828 9.5 32 21 21 0 0
HQMaster Spiral 4-Inch 9.5 30 21 20 0 0
Yonico 14130 9.4 28 20 20 0 0
YOKISHUN 3-Flute 2-Pack 9.4 27 19 21 0 0

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.

FAQ: lasers and CNC

What makes a router bit extra long?

Cutting length and overall length beyond a standard bit. The bits here run from a 1-1/4 in cutting length to a 3 in flute, with overall lengths from 2-1/2 in to 4.7 in.

Straight bit or spiral bit for deep cuts?

Straight bits cut grooves and dados with a simple profile; spiral bits shear and clear chips. For deep cuts, the Accusize straight bit has the biggest stated flute, while the HQMaster downcut spiral leaves the cleanest top edge.

Can I use a long router bit in a handheld router?

The Freud, Accusize and Yonico listings state table-mount and hand-held use, and the Accusize and Freud state CNC use too. Long bits in a handheld router need a firm grip and shallow passes.

Downcut or up-cut spiral?

Downcut (HQMaster) pushes chips down and leaves a clean top edge on slots and dados. Up-cut (YOKISHUN) pulls chips up and suits detail work and engraving. Pick by the edge you care about.

What speed do these bits run at?

Only the Freud states a figure: computer balanced for vibration-free operation over 22,000 RPM. The other listings state no speed, so follow your router’s guidance for the bit diameter.
