If you are cutting letters and V-grooves into a sign, the chamfer mill vs v bit question has a simple answer: you want a V-bit, not a chamfer mill. A chamfer mill cuts beveled edges around the outside of a part; a V-bit plunges into the surface and carves the V-shaped groove that makes lettering readable. The four bits below are all 60-degree V-bits (one set adds 15, 20, 30 and 90 degree bits), compared on what their listings state.

Chamfer mill vs v bit: what each one does

A chamfer mill is an edge tool. It rides along the edge of a part and cuts a beveled angle there, which is what you want for breaking sharp edges, deburring cut parts and adding a finished bevel to a plaque blank. It is not a lettering tool: it does not plunge into the middle of a surface to carve grooves.

A V-bit is a groove tool. Its cutting edges meet at an included angle, 60 degrees on all four bits here, and the point plunges into the material to carve a V-shaped channel. Go deeper and the groove gets wider; stay shallow and the line stays fine. That is why V-bits own sign lettering, engraved designs and decorative veining, and why a chamfer mill cannot do that job.

The four V-bits, side by side

Whiteside 1541. Solid carbide, 60 degree included angle, 3 flutes, 1/4 inch cutting diameter, 7/32 inch point length, 1/4 inch shank and 2 inch overall length, for use with 1/4 inch collets. The listing states natural woods, composite woods and hard plastics, and gives an item weight of 9.07 g.

Amana 45624-K. Spektra coated solid carbide, 60 degree x 1/4 D x 7/32 CH x 1/4 inch shank, 3-flute, made in the USA. The listing names the widest material list here: CFRP, double sided melamine, laminate, laminated plywood, melamine particle board, MDF, OSB, particle board, softwood and hardwood, and veneered plywood. It is the only one of the four with a stated warranty term, 12 months.

Yonico 14993q. A 60 degree V-groove bit with a 1/2 inch cutting diameter and 1/4 inch shank, 1 flute, a 5/8 inch cutting height and a 7/16 inch v-section height. The listing states C3 micro-grain tungsten carbide blades with silver induction brazing, for use on CNC, table mount and handheld routers.

SILIVN 5-piece set. Five bits in 15, 20, 30, 60 and 90 degree angles, 1/4 inch shank, 2 flute, with a blue nano-coating, each in an independent storage case. The listing assigns jobs to the angles: the 15 degree bit for detail carving, the 20 degree profile bit for outlining letters, the 30 degree for general engraving, and the 60 and 90 degree bits for V-grooves. One table wrinkle: the spec table says Number of Items 4 against the title’s 5-piece set and the 5 Count unit count; the guide trusts the 5. The stated 24-month satisfaction service is customer service, not a warranty term.

Angle, flutes and coating

Sixty degrees is the standard V-bit angle for lettering and signs, and it is what three of the four listings sell on its own. The SILIVN set shows what the other angles are for: 15 and 20 degrees for fine detail and letter outlines, 30 degrees for general engraving, 90 degrees for wider grooves. Flute counts here run from 1 (Yonico) to 2 (SILIVN) to 3 (Whiteside and Amana); the Whiteside claims extreme cutting performance from its three edges. Coatings differ too: Amana’s Spektra nACo nanocomposite, SILIVN’s blue nano-coating, and Yonico’s C3 micro-grain carbide. Amana and Yonico state long edge life; the SILIVN listing claims better cutting strength while saying time will tell which lasts longer.

Matching the bit to the job

Start from the material list each listing states. The Amana names the widest range here: CFRP, double sided melamine, laminate, laminated plywood, melamine particle board, MDF, OSB, particle board, softwood, hardwood and veneered plywood. The Whiteside states natural woods, composite woods and hard plastics. If your work is signs in MDF or plywood, both cover you; if you cut laminates or composites, the Amana’s stated list is the one that names them.

Then match the angle to the line. The SILIVN set is the only one here that shows the full angle ladder: the 15 degree bit for detail carving, the 20 degree profile bit with a flat cut tip for outlining letters in wood signs, the 30 degree for general engraving, and the 60 and 90 degree bits for V-grooves. A narrower angle cuts a finer line and takes longer on wide lettering; the 90 degree bit opens the widest groove of the set. The Whiteside, Amana and Yonico each sell the 60 degree angle on its own, which is the standard lettering angle.

Check the shank and the collet before ordering. All four listings state a 1/4 inch shank, and the Whiteside states use with 1/4 inch collets. The Yonico is the only one here that states use on CNC, table mount and handheld routers, so if you run a handheld router, that stated compatibility matters. The Amana states a 12 month warranty, the only warranty term of the four; the SILIVN states a 24-month satisfaction service, which is customer service rather than a warranty.

FAQ: lasers and CNC

Can I use a chamfer mill for lettering?

No. A chamfer mill cuts beveled edges on the outside of a part; it does not carve grooves into a surface. For lettering and V-grooves, use a V-bit like the four compared here.

What angle V-bit should I get for sign lettering?

Sixty degrees is the standard angle for sign lettering, and it is what three of the four listings sell. The SILIVN set adds a 90 degree bit for wider grooves and 15, 20 and 30 degree bits for detail work.

Will these bits work in a handheld router?

The Yonico listing states use on CNC, table mount and handheld routers. The Whiteside states 1/4 inch collets, and the Amana and SILIVN listings describe CNC router bits; check your collet size against the stated 1/4 inch shanks.

Do any of these bits state a warranty?

The Amana listing states a 12 month warranty. The SILIVN listing states a 24-month satisfaction service, which is customer service rather than a warranty term. The Whiteside and Yonico listings state no warranty.

What materials are these V-bits for?

The Whiteside states natural woods, composite woods and hard plastics. The Amana states the widest list, including MDF, plywood, melamine, laminate, OSB, particle board, softwood, hardwood and veneered plywood. Match the bit to your material before the first cut.
