Leather patches for hats are a bread-and-butter laser job: a blank patch, a logo, and a heat press to stick it on. Leather vs vinyl for laser engraving has a safety answer before it has a material answer. Vinyl (PVC) must never go under the laser. The four listings below include one genuine leather and three laserable leatherette blanks, ranked for engraving work.

Honest note

Three listings below are laserable leatherette (PU/faux leather), not vinyl; the fourth is genuine leather not marketed for laser engraving. No vinyl (PVC) blank is recommended here.

Leather vs vinyl for laser engraving: the short answer

Choose a blank explicitly sold as laserable leatherette. Never laser vinyl (PVC). Of the four listings, the three leatherette blanks are marketed for laser engraving with a heat press adhesive back; the genuine leather sheet is a craft leather, not a laser blank.

Why vinyl is off the table

The site safety rules are explicit: never suggest lasering PVC, vinyl, PVC faux leather, polycarbonate or ABS. If a blank is vinyl or might be, do not put it under the laser. The leatherette listings here describe their material as PU leather, artificial leather or leatherette, not PVC, and they are sold as laserable.

What the listings state

The TeeLiy listing is genuine top full grain cowhide leather, 1.8 to 2.0 millimeters thick, in an 8 by 12 inch dark brown sheet, sold for crafts, tooling and sewing. It is not marketed for laser engraving. The GrliTra listing is a 5-pack of laserable leatherette sheets, 12.6 by 10.2 inches, with heat press adhesive, in latte brown. The two TWIG listings are 5-piece laserable leatherette sets, 12.6 by 10.2 inches, with heat press adhesive; one is rustic brown and states the laser engraving color is black, the other is black-red and comes in 4 colors.

Heat press adhesive

Three listings include a heat press adhesive back for ironing the patch onto hats, caps, jeans or bags. The GrliTra and both TWIG listings recommend 270 degrees Fahrenheit for the heat press or iron. The TeeLiy genuine leather has no adhesive; it is sold for sewing, tooling and crafts.

Gear: four listings, ranked

The four listings below are ranked for laser engraving work, best first.

1. TWIG Laserable Leatherette, Rustic Brown. Five large 12.6 by 10.2 inch pieces with heat press adhesive. The listing states the laser engraving color is black, and it carries a 2-year warranty. It is the pick when you want a stated engraving color.

2. TWIG Leather/Leatherette Patches, Black-Red. Five 12.6 by 10.2 inch pieces with heat press adhesive, in black-red with 4 colors available. The listing carries a 2-year warranty. It is the pick for color variety.

3. GrliTra Laserable Leatherette, Latte Brown. A 5-pack of 12.6 by 10.2 inch sheets with heat press adhesive, marketed for laser engraving and UV printing. The warranty is 30 days. It is the pick for a smaller commitment.

4. TeeLiy Genuine Leather Sheet. A genuine top full grain cowhide sheet, 1.8 to 2.0 millimeters thick, 8 by 12 inches in dark brown. It is sold for leather crafts, not as a laser blank, so it ranks last for engraving use. It is the pick if the project calls for real leather and hand work.
