If you want to sell engraved hat patches, wallets or small leather goods, leather vs canvas for laser engraving is the first material decision to get right. The short answer: buy leather. All four blanks featured in this guide are leather or leatherette with stated laser-engraving compatibility, stated sheet sizes and, on three of them, a heat-press adhesive back. Canvas is not covered by any listing here, so a canvas buy needs its own careful read before it goes under the laser.

Other machines to compare

The sections below walk through what leather brings to the laser, what to check on a canvas listing, the four blanks ranked, and the safety notes that apply to every material on this page.

Honest note

The four blanks below are leather or leatherette; none is canvas. The canvas advice in this guide is buying guidance, and every number in it comes from the leather listings.

The short answer on leather vs canvas for laser engraving

Leather wins for a simple reason: the listings state what you get. The TeeLiy listing gives genuine top full grain cowhide at 1.8-2.0MM thick and 3-4oz in 8×12 inch sheets. The GrliTra and TWIG listings give 5-piece packs of laserable leatherette at 12.6 x 10.2 inches with hot melt adhesive and a recommended press temperature of 270 degrees Fahrenheit. The TWIG rustic brown listing even states the engraving color: black. With canvas, you get none of that from these listings, because none of them is canvas. If your heart is set on canvas, read its listing the way this guide reads the leather ones: material, size, coating and stated laser compatibility, in that order.

What leather brings to the laser

Leather and leatherette show up in these listings in two forms. The TeeLiy sheets are genuine leather, sold for tooling, sewing, carving and stamping, which makes them the pick for wallets, earrings and goods where the material itself is the product. The GrliTra and TWIG sheets are leatherette, a faux leather with hot melt adhesive on the back, sold for hat patches: press them on with a heat press or iron at 270 degrees Fahrenheit, then engrave. The TWIG rustic brown listing states the laser engraving comes out black, and the TWIG black-red listing notes the laser comes in 4 colors to choose from.

One listing needs a flag. The TeeLiy bullets call the sheets oil tanned, but the spec table says chrome tanned. The title and bullets win over the spec table here, but the two do not agree, so confirm the tanning with the seller if it matters to your project. A smaller flag on the TWIG black-red listing: the title says black-red while the spec table lists the color as black.

What to check before you engrave canvas

Canvas is a woven fabric, and a woven fabric is only as laser-friendly as its coating and finish. Before a canvas blank goes under the laser, check the listing for four things: the weave or weight, any coating or treatment, whether the maker states laser compatibility, and the sheet or roll size. If the listing does not state these, ask the seller. The same rule applies to leatherette: the TWIG rustic brown listing states PU leather, but the GrliTra and TWIG black-red listings do not state whether the faux leather is PVC or PU based. Never laser PVC, vinyl, PVC-based faux leather, polycarbonate or ABS; they can release harmful fumes and damage the machine.

The gear: four leather blanks, ranked

Ranked by stated specs and listing completeness. All four state laser-engraving compatibility.

1. TeeLiy genuine leather tooling sheets

The only genuine leather here: top full grain cowhide, 1.8-2.0MM thick, 3-4oz, in 8×12 inch sheets of dark brown. Sold for tooling, sewing, carving, stamping and hobby work, from wallets to earrings. The pick for makers who sell goods where real leather is the point. Note the oil-tanned versus chrome-tanned mismatch described above; confirm with the seller if the tanning matters to you.

2. TWIG rustic brown leatherette, 5 pack

Five laserable leatherette sheets at 12.6 x 10.2 inches in rustic brown, with hot melt adhesive for heat press or iron application at 270 degrees Fahrenheit. The listing states the laser engraving color is black and gives a 2 year warranty, the longest stated term here. The pick for hat patches in volume: five large pieces, a stated engraving color and the strongest warranty statement.

3. GrliTra latte brown leatherette, 5 pack

Five laserable leatherette sheets at 12.6 x 10.2 inches in latte brown, also with hot melt adhesive and the same 270 degrees Fahrenheit recommendation. The listing states a 30 days warranty. The pick for makers who want the patch workflow at a smaller commitment per design: the same sheet size as the TWIG packs, a lighter color for contrast, and an adhesive back that irons or sews on.

4. TWIG black-red leatherette, 5 pack

Five leatherette patches at 12.6 x 10.2 inches in black-red, with heat press adhesive backing and a 2 year warranty. The listing notes the laser comes in 4 colors to choose from and gives an item weight of 1.6 ounces. The pick for dark patches where a black base makes the engraving pop. The title says black-red while the spec table lists black, so check the color on the listing before you order.

Safety: fumes, fire and materials

Every material on this page needs the same three precautions. Ventilate: exhaust the smoke outdoors or use a fume extractor built for laser fumes; see our fume extractor guide. Fire: keep a suitable extinguisher within reach and never leave a running job unattended. Materials: never laser PVC, vinyl, PVC-based faux leather, polycarbonate or ABS. If a leatherette listing does not state the base material, ask the seller before it goes under the laser.

FAQ: lasers and CNC

Can you laser engrave genuine leather?

Yes. The TeeLiy listing sells genuine top full grain cowhide sheets for crafts including tooling, carving and stamping, at 1.8-2.0MM thick. Ventilate the job and keep the work area clear, as with any material.

What temperature presses the adhesive patches?

The GrliTra and TWIG listings recommend 270 degrees Fahrenheit with a heat press machine or iron. Both state the adhesive is a hot melt type on the back of the sheet.

What sizes do the blanks come in?

The TeeLiy genuine leather sheets are 8×12 inches. All three leatherette packs are 12.6 x 10.2 inches per their listings. Five pieces per pack on the leatherette; a single sheet on the TeeLiy.

Does the engraving come out black?

The TWIG rustic brown listing states the laser engraving color is black. The other listings do not state an engraving color, so run a trial on a scrap corner first.

Is leatherette safe to laser engrave?

Only if you know what it is made of. Never laser PVC-based faux leather. The TWIG rustic brown listing states PU leather; the other leatherette listings do not state the base, so ask the seller before engraving.

Can I engrave canvas with my laser?

None of the listings in this guide covers canvas, so there is no stated size, coating or compatibility to quote. Read a canvas listing for weave, coating, size and stated laser compatibility, and ask the seller about anything it does not state.
