What the power supply listings tell you
Listings for budget supplies mix real figures with noise. Two of the four here state a warranty term, two state safety certifications, and two carry internal contradictions between the title and the spec table, so read the bullets before the table. Current ratings matter most: a 10A supply cannot feed steppers that draw more, and the listings state their maxima plainly.
How to choose the best CNC power supply under $40
Match the voltage to the drivers
Stepper drivers run at a rated voltage, and the supply must match it. The VAYALT and SUPERNIGHT list fixed 12V output, the ALITOVE lists 24V, and the DROK adjusts from 0 to 48V for mixed setups. A 12V supply cannot drive a 24V bus, so check the driver rating first. For the matching driver side, see best stepper driver for CNC.
Size the current for the load
The listings state their maxima: 50A on the VAYALT, 30A on the SUPERNIGHT, 15A on the ALITOVE and 10A on the DROK. The DROK listing notes the actual current depends on the load and caps at 10A. Add up what the steppers and spindle draw, then leave headroom, since a supply run at its limit runs hot.
Read the protections and certifications
The VAYALT lists RoHS, CE, LVD and EMC certifications; the DROK lists FCC and UL specification compliance. All four list some combination of overload, over-voltage and short-circuit protection, with the ALITOVE adding thermal cut-off and the SUPERNIGHT auto-recovery. Certifications and named protections are the closest a budget listing comes to a safety record.
Check the warranty term
Only two listings state a warranty term: 24 months on the VAYALT and 1 year on the DROK, with the SUPERNIGHT promising 1 year of replacement assurance. The ALITOVE states no warranty term. A stated term is the maker’s promise in writing, so it scores.
Project Match
- CNC and 3D printer builds: the VAYALT lists 3D printers, brushless motors and automation equipment among its uses; the SUPERNIGHT lists 3D printers, CCTV and radio.
- LED strip projects: the SUPERNIGHT, ALITOVE and DROK all list LED strips or LED drivers as uses.
- Lab bench and mixed-voltage work: the DROK lists 0-48V adjustable output with an LED display for the set voltage.
- CCTV and radio: the SUPERNIGHT and ALITOVE list CCTV and radio; the VAYALT lists CCTV camera systems.
How the scores add up
Each supply is scored out of 10 on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. For power supplies, safety points come from stated certifications and named protection circuits, and warranty points from a stated term. The published scores show as x.x out of 10 on the cards.
| Product | HQ Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VAYALT 12V 50A Supply | 9.7 | 30 | 21 | 21 | 9 | 4 |
| DROK 48V 10A Supply | 9.7 | 32 | 22 | 21 | 8 | 3 |
| SUPERNIGHT 12V 30A | 9.6 | 29 | 20 | 21 | 7 | 3 |
| ALITOVE 24V 15A Supply | 9.5 | 28 | 20 | 20 | 7 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
FAQ: lasers and CNC
What voltage does a CNC power supply need?
Match the drivers. The VAYALT and SUPERNIGHT list fixed 12V output, the ALITOVE lists 24V, and the DROK adjusts from 0 to 48V. A supply cannot change a driver’s rated voltage, so the driver decides.
How many amps should a CNC power supply deliver?
The listings state 50A, 30A, 15A and 10A maxima. The DROK listing notes the actual current depends on the load and caps at 10A. Total the steppers and spindle draw, then leave headroom.
Can one supply run both 12V and 24V devices?
Only the DROK, which lists 0-48V adjustable output. The other three list fixed 12V or 24V output and cannot change voltage.
What do the protection features do?
The listings name overload, over-voltage, short-circuit and thermal cut-offs that shut the supply down before damage. The SUPERNIGHT adds auto-recovery, and the DROK adds an LED display showing the set voltage.
Do these work on US mains power?
All four list 110V/220V input. The DROK listing notes the default input is 220V and must be switched for 110V cities, so check the switch before first use.
