A compression bit cuts clean on both faces of a sheet, which is why makers reach for one when plywood edges keep chipping. We compared five bits to find the best 1/2 inch compression router bit, checking shank size, cut length, coating, bearings and what each listing states.

Buying guide: choosing the best 1/2 inch compression router bit
Compression vs straight bits
A compression bit pairs up-cut flutes at the tip with down-cut flutes above, so the top and bottom faces of the sheet both cut clean. A straight bit tears one face. Every pick here is a compression bit, so the choice comes down to size and features, not cut type.
Shank size and collet
Four of the five bits take a 1/2 in shank, which fits the 1/2 in collets on full-size routers. The SICWOOD bit is the exception with a 1/4 in shank, so it suits compact routers instead. Match the shank to the collet you own before anything else.
Cut length and overall length
Cut length decides how deep a pass goes: 3 in on the EANOSIC 5 in bit and the SpeTool, 1-1/2 in on the EANOSIC 4 in bit and the Whiteside, and 1/2 in on the SICWOOD. Overall length matters on smaller machines, where a 5 in bit may not clear the workpiece. See hardwood vs softwood for CNC router for what each material asks of the bit.
Coatings and bearings
The two EANOSIC bits list a Nano Blue coating the maker credits for heat resistance and edge life. The Whiteside and SICWOOD bits carry bearings for template work, with the Whiteside listing double bearings. If your work is all freehand, a bearing adds nothing. For more on bit types, see dovetail vs finger joint router bit.
Project Match
- Sheet goods with clean top and bottom edges: EANOSIC 4-Inch Bit or SpeTool W02006.
- Deep dado, rabbet and mortise cuts: EANOSIC 5-Inch Bit or SpeTool W02006, both with 3 in of cut length.
- Template and pattern routing: Whiteside UDFT5152 with double bearings, or SICWOOD 1/4 in Bit for compact routers.
- Shallow laminate trim: SICWOOD 1/4 in Bit.
How the scores add up
Each bit is scored on performance, build, value, safety and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. A spec the listing does not publish scores nothing. No bit here states a warranty term or a safety certification, so those categories score nothing across the board.
| Product | HQ Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EANOSIC 4-Inch Bit | 9.6 | 30 | 21 | 21 | n/a | 0 |
| EANOSIC 5-Inch Bit | 9.6 | 30 | 21 | 20 | n/a | 0 |
| Whiteside UDFT5152 | 9.6 | 29 | 22 | 19 | n/a | 0 |
| SpeTool W02006 | 9.6 | 29 | 20 | 20 | n/a | 0 |
| SICWOOD 1/4 in Bit | 9.5 | 27 | 20 | 20 | n/a | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score. Safety counts only for powered gear or where the listing states safety features; where it does not apply, the score is taken over the remaining 90 points.
FAQ: lasers and CNC
What does a compression router bit do?
It cuts with up-cut flutes at the tip and down-cut flutes above, so both faces of the material cut clean in one pass. That is why makers use them on plywood and laminates.
Can a 1/2 inch compression bit cut metal?
The EANOSIC 4-Inch Bit listing names carbon steel, aluminum alloy, tool steel and cast iron among its materials. The other listings name wood materials only, so check the listing for your bit before cutting metal.
Do I need a 1/2 inch collet for these bits?
Four of the five need a 1/2 in collet. The SICWOOD bit takes a 1/4 in shank instead.
How do I pick between the 3 in and 1-1/2 in cut lengths?
Match the cut length to the thickest material you cut in one pass. The 3 in bits suit deep work; the 1-1/2 in bits suit sheet goods and trim.
