A laser engraving spray lets a CO2, diode or fiber laser mark bare metal: coat the surface, lase the design, rinse off the excess. The marks come out black or red depending on the formula. This roundup of the best laser engraving spray picks compares five sprays on mark color, laser compatibility, materials and can size.

What the listings tell you, and what they leave out
We read five laser marking spray listings. Only one states a warranty term. Two listings contradict themselves on the basics: the OMTech red spray’s title and bullets promise red marks while its spec table says black, and the xTool title says 1pc and Pack of 2 in the same line. Both are flagged in the reviews below.
Buying guide: choosing the best laser engraving spray
Black or red marks
Four sprays here make black marks. Only the OMTech red spray lists red marks, and only on stainless steel. If your work is mostly stainless tumblers and tools and you want red, that is the only pick that lists it.
Laser types and minimum watts
Check the minimums before you buy. xTool lists CO2 at 25W minimum, fiber at 10W minimum and diode at 10W minimum. Brilliance lists CO2 at 25W minimum, fiber and YAG at 10W and diode at 10W. The OMTech sprays list 25W and above CO2 plus fiber. LaserBond lists CO2, fiber, diode and YAG without stating minimum watts.
Materials
Match the spray to the material. xTool lists metals, ceramics and glass. LaserBond lists metal, glass, ceramic and stone. The OMTech 13 oz lists aluminum, stainless steel and brass. Brilliance is built for ceramic and glass. The OMTech red lists stainless steel only.
How to apply it
Shake the can first: xTool says shake until the glass bead moves, Brilliance says shake for 2 minutes. Hold the can 6 to 8 inches from the surface and lay a thin, even coat, per LaserBond and Brilliance. The OMTech listings say the ink dries in under 5 minutes, or in 2 minutes with a hot air blower, and the excess rinses off with water after marking.
Marking sprays are aerosols: spray in a ventilated area and keep the can away from heat and flames. The laser itself still needs its normal precautions: eye protection, ventilation and never leaving a job running unattended.
Project Match
- Tumblers, tools and knives (stainless steel, aluminum, brass): the OMTech 13 oz, xTool and LaserBond listings name these metals.
- Ceramic tiles and glassware: the Brilliance listing is built for ceramic and glass; xTool and LaserBond also list them.
- Stone and awards: LaserBond lists stone among its materials.
- Shops running YAG lasers: LaserBond and Brilliance list YAG compatibility.
- Red marks instead of black: only the OMTech red spray lists red.
How the scores add up
Each pick is scored on performance, build, value, safety and warranty. A spec the listing does not publish scores nothing.
| Product | HQ Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| xTool Black Spray | 9.6 | 32 | 21 | 21 | 0 | 2 |
| LaserBond 100 | 9.5 | 30 | 21 | 21 | 0 | 0 |
| OMTech 13 oz Spray | 9.4 | 29 | 20 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
| Brilliance Spray | 9.4 | 28 | 20 | 20 | 0 | 0 |
| OMTech Red Spray | 9.4 | 27 | 19 | 19 | 0 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
FAQ: lasers and CNC
How does laser marking spray work?
You spray a thin coat on the surface, lase your design through it, then rinse off the unmarked excess. The laser bonds the marking agent to the surface where it hits, leaving a permanent high-contrast mark.
What wattage laser do I need for marking spray?
For CO2, the listings here state 25W minimum. For fiber and diode, xTool and Brilliance state 10W minimum. Below those minimums the listings do not promise a mark.
Can I use marking spray on wood?
None of the listings here lists wood. They cover metal, ceramic, glass and stone. For wood, a diode or CO2 laser marks directly without spray.
How far should I hold the spray can?
LaserBond and Brilliance both say 6 to 8 inches from the surface, using a thin, even, back-and-forth motion. A heavy coat wastes spray and can hurt mark quality.
Does the mark wash off?
The mark itself is permanent; what rinses off is the unmarked excess spray. Both OMTech listings and xTool describe a simple water rinse after marking.
