You have a design ready and a stack of blanks on the bench, and the stock you pick will shape how the engraving reads. Basswood vs plywood for laser engraving comes down to grain, consistency and what each listing actually states: the basswood listings promise smooth surfaces for detail work, while the rosewood and walnut plywood listings name diode and CO2 laser compatibility with darker faces. The four listings below, ranked by what they state, show the tradeoffs.

Basswood vs plywood for laser engraving: the short answer

Pick basswood sheets when the listing promises an even grain and a smooth surface with little knots for engraving detail; the Adrattnay listing states exactly that, plus the only 1-year warranty in this group. Pick plywood when you want a darker tone: the Creatorally rosewood sheets and the ROBOTIME walnut sheets both name diode and CO2 lasers. Read every listing twice, because all four contradict themselves on size or species somewhere.

The gear: four listings, ranked

1. Adrattnay 24-pack basswood sheets. 24 pieces at 12 x 18 in and 3mm thick, with a stated 1-year warranty, the longest in this group. The listing promises even-grained basswood with little knots, a smooth surface for paint, stain or markers, and easy cutting with a laser, table saw or box cutter. It notes a 1/32 in negative size tolerance.

2. Creatorally 10-pack rosewood plywood. 10 sheets at 16.5 x 11.7 in and 3mm, in a rosewood veneer with deep reddish-brown tones, stated for diode and CO2 lasers. The listing claims clean edges, minimal charring and a 6-month warranty. One wrinkle: bullet 5 calls them black walnut sheets, against the rosewood title; trust the title.

3. ROBOTIME 10-pack walnut plywood. 10 walnut sheets at 3mm, stated for CO2 and diode lasers and rotary engraving, with a 0.2mm thickness tolerance and warping tips in the listing. The title says 12 x 18 in while the bullets say 12 x 16 in, and the spec table lists Number of Items as 24 against a 10-count pack; the title and bullets read as the intended sizes.

4. Juexica 24-pack basswood plywood. 24 basswood sheets at 3mm for laser cutting, engraving, CNC and wood burning. The listing gives 16 x 24 in in the bullets but 15.94 in width and 24.02 x 15.94 x 0.1 in in the spec table, and 0.12 in against 0.1 in for thickness; treat the bullet sizes as approximate.

Reading the size claims

Every one of these listings disagrees with itself somewhere, so read the bullets and the spec table together. The Juexica bullets say 16 x 24 in and 40.5 x 61 cm, while the spec table says 15.94 in wide and 24.02 x 15.94 x 0.1 in. The Adrattnay bullets say 12 x 18 in and 30.3 x 45.7 x 3mm, while the spec table says 12 x 18 x 2.8 in and 0.13 in thick, with a 1/32 in negative tolerance that at least warns you. The Creatorally title says 16.5 x 11.7 in and the table says 16.5 x 11.6 x 0.12 in, a small gap. The ROBOTIME title says 12 x 18 in and the bullets say 12 x 16 in, or 30 x 42 cm. When the numbers differ, trust the title and bullets over the table, and measure a sheet before you cut a full run.

Warranties and warping

Two listings state a warranty: Adrattnay at 1 year, Creatorally at 6 months. The Juexica and ROBOTIME listings state none. Two listings talk about warping: Adrattnay calls its sheets not easy to warp, and ROBOTIME gives a full flattening routine of dampening, laying flat and weighing down for several hours to a day, plus a 0.2mm thickness tolerance. If flat stock matters for your engraving, those two statements are the ones to weigh. For more sheet options, see best plywood for laser cut models and baltic birch vs MDF for laser engraving.

Laser and ventilation notes

The Creatorally and ROBOTIME listings name diode lasers, and both add CO2; the Juexica and Adrattnay listings say laser cutting and engraving without naming a laser type. Match the sheet to the machine you own: check our diode vs CO2 guide and the best laser engraver for wood picks if you are still choosing. Cutting wood makes smoke and fine dust, so ventilate the work area and keep the machine attended while it runs.

Safety

Never laser PVC, vinyl or unknown coated stock, which can release harmful fumes. Ventilate the work area, keep a fire extinguisher nearby, stay with the machine while it runs, and see the FDA guidance on laser products.

FAQ: lasers and CNC

Is basswood or plywood better for laser engraving?

It depends on the project. The basswood listings promise an even grain and smooth surface for detail work, while the rosewood and walnut plywood listings offer darker faces and name diode and CO2 laser compatibility. Neither material wins on its own.

What thickness are these sheets?

All four listings state 3mm, or 1/8 in. The Adrattnay spec table also lists 0.13 in, the Creatorally table lists 0.12 in and the Juexica table lists 0.1 in, so treat 3mm as the maker’s stated thickness.

Do these sheet listings state a warranty?

Two do: Adrattnay states 1 year and Creatorally states 6 months. The Juexica and ROBOTIME listings state no warranty term.

Can a diode laser cut 3mm plywood?

The Creatorally and ROBOTIME listings name diode lasers for their 3mm sheets. The Juexica and Adrattnay listings say laser cutting without naming a laser type, so confirm against your machine’s stated abilities.

Why do the sizes disagree within a listing?

Amazon listings mix bullet copy and spec table data from different sources. The Juexica, Adrattnay, Creatorally and ROBOTIME listings each show a small size or species mismatch; the title and bullets are the safer read.
