Verdict: Pick acrylic for laser engraving and cutting, where the listings state clean CO2-laser cuts and crisp engraving. Pick HDPE for CNC-machined parts, where impact strength and corrosion resistance matter. Among the four examples, the YMYKLB colored acrylic sheets score highest with the most complete listing.

The acrylic vs HDPE for CNC question comes down to the machine doing the work. Acrylic is the laser material: the listings here state clean cuts on CO2 lasers with no burning or yellowing, plus crisp engraving. HDPE is the CNC material: the listings state impact resistance, corrosion resistance and easy machining with common CNC techniques. This comparison uses four sheet and block examples, two per side, to show what separates them.

Acrylic vs HDPE for CNC: what actually differs

Acrylic cuts and engraves beautifully on a laser; the stated impact-strength claims belong to the HDPE side. HDPE machines well on a CNC router but the listings here state no laser use at all. The YMYKLB acrylic listing states its sheets are for CO2 lasers, engravers, table saws, jigsaws and drills, with clean, crisp cuts and no burning, yellowing or rough edges. The Polvtor HDPE listing states its block is easy to process with CNC cutting, heat bending and thermoforming. Neither HDPE listing mentions laser cutting, and neither acrylic listing mentions CNC routing by name. Buy the material for the machine you own.

Form and thickness

The acrylic side comes as thin sheets. The Bucherry is a 20-pack of clear cast acrylic blanks, 2 mm thick, in square and round shapes with protective film on both sides, aimed at LED light bases, signs and engraving. The YMYKLB is a 12-pack of colored cast acrylic sheets, 3 mm (1/8 inch) thick and 12 by 12 inches, in 12 colors with a removable protective film. The HDPE side comes as thick stock. The Polvtor is a single black block, 12 by 3 by 0.5 inches. The Sasylvia is two black 12 by 12 inch sheets, one 1/2 inch and one 1 inch thick. Thin sheets suit laser work and signs; thick blocks and sheets suit machined parts.

Laser and CNC use

This is where the sides separate. Both acrylic listings state laser cutting: the YMYKLB for CO2 lasers with no burning or yellowing, the Bucherry for laser cutting and saw cutting. Both HDPE listings state machining: the Polvtor for CNC cutting, heat bending and thermoforming, the Sasylvia for CNC, engineering and machining panels. Neither HDPE listing states laser use. If your work is laser-first, the acrylic side is the only one with stated laser support. If your work is CNC-first, the HDPE side is the only one with stated machining support.

Durability and weather

The HDPE listings make the durability claims. The Polvtor states corrosion resistance against most acids, alkalis and salt, plus wear resistance and a low-friction surface. The Sasylvia states impact resistance, corrosion resistance except against strong oxidizing agents, a service life of more than 25 years, and a fit temperature range of -70 degrees Celsius to 90 degrees Celsius. The YMYKLB acrylic states UV resistance and weatherproofing with no cracking, yellowing or fogging indoors or outdoors. The Bucherry states water, alcohol, oil and dilute acid staining resistance. For outdoor or harsh-environment parts, HDPE’s stated toughness wins; for signs that need to look good, acrylic’s stated clarity and UV resistance win.

Choose acrylic if

  • Your work is laser cutting and engraving.
  • You want colored or clear sheets for signs and displays.
  • You need the listing to state CO2-laser compatibility.
  • UV resistance and weatherproofing matter, as the YMYKLB states.

Choose HDPE if

  • Your work is CNC machining and machined parts.
  • You need impact strength and corrosion resistance.
  • You want thick stock: 1/2 inch and 1 inch sheets or a solid block.
  • The part faces harsh conditions, within the stated -70 to 90 Celsius range.

FAQ: lasers and CNC

Can I cut HDPE on a laser?

Neither HDPE listing states laser cutting; both acrylic listings do. Check your laser maker’s material guidance before cutting any plastic.

Which is better for CNC-machined parts?

HDPE, on the listings’ stated strengths: impact resistance, corrosion resistance and easy machining with CNC cutting and thermoforming.

Which acrylic is thicker?

The YMYKLB at 3 mm (1/8 inch) against the Bucherry at 2 mm.

Do any of these come with protective film?

The Bucherry has protective film on both sides and the YMYKLB a removable film. The Sasylvia explicitly states its HDPE surface has no protective film.

Do any state a warranty?

None of the four listings states a warranty term.
